Between a City Gate and a Fairytale Forest

Ancient little towns, vast heathlands, dense forests, regal castles, and dancing trees. These are the kind of elements fairytale storytellers love. Cycling from Otterlo, you will encounter all of them along the way. And after each new wonder during the day, an extra surprise awaits in the evening in the form of a culinary dinner. The journey is almost at its end.

Dream Palaces

This fairytale atmosphere begins in Otterlo. Via the beautiful Kootwijkerzand you cycle to Harderwijk with its ancient town centre and the legendary Vischpoort. Through the Elspeeter forest and across vast heathlands you arrive at Kroondomein Het Loo. Naturally with a dream palace that cannot be missing from such a “story”. Take a look inside to see how the princess slept on the pea. Then it’s time to move on. Via the Veluwezoom and the Postbank to regal places such as Rosendael Castle and the parks Klarenbeek, Sonsbeek, and Zypendaal. Jachtslot Sint-Hubertus and the magically situated Kröller-Müller Museum also appear along the route. Unfortunately, every fairytale must come to an end.

A Picture-Perfect Town

Harderwijk was once called the city of passers-by. The town offered accommodation to visitors from far and wide: from nuns and monks to seafarers and students. Among the latter were the physician Herman Boerhave and the Swedish botanist Carolus Linnaeus. They studied at the Gelderse Academy. Besides being a fishing village, Harderwijk was also a true university town. Today it is mainly a picture-perfect place. The Vischpoort appears on almost every postcard and is the iconic landmark of Harderwijk. Indeed, a perfect picture. But there are many more in this former Hanseatic city: the Grote Kerk, the Catharinakapel, the centuries-old city wall, the Luttekepoort and the Vanghentoren, once a prison and a soup kitchen for the poor.

View at the Posbank: Nature and Architecture at Their Finest

Park your bike at the futuristic Paviljoen de Posbank, located in the heart of National Park Veluwezoom. Thanks to its large glass walls, you can immediately enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding greenery from inside. A unique walkway spirals upward along the glass façade to the roof—where a tree literally grows through it. A striking piece of architecture set right in the middle of nature.

From the roof you have a breathtaking view over the Posbank and the Veluwezoom. A little further on you’ll find the famous stone Posbank, the viewpoint that gave this area its name. This masonry bench was placed in 1928 to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the ANWB. On clear days you can see the River IJssel winding through the landscape in the distance, surrounded by rolling hills and wide valleys.
