Veluwe Wonders

Rolling heathlands, sweeping sand drifts, and forests with the occasional quirky tree – the Veluwe is famous for its stunning natural beauty. But add in the unique stops along the way, and the experience becomes truly unforgettable. Visit the Belmonte Arboretum, the former Radio Kootwijk transmission station, the magnificent Paleis Het Loo (don’t miss the view of the gardens from the roof), and the winding streets of the Hanseatic town of Deventer. And that’s just the beginning. Stop by Zutphen’s famous chained library, take in the breathtaking panorama of the Posbank (and maybe even spot Beatrix cycling by), and continue your adventure.

Cycle and Explore

Discover the medieval Rosendael Castle, snap photos of the Sint Hubertus Hunting Lodge, and marvel at the colorful Van Gogh collection at the Kröller-Müller Museum. All this can be experienced during the x-day trekking tour across the Veluwe. With five routes to choose from, we bring you the very best of the Netherlands’ most beautiful region. And if you’re lucky – “Hey, look over there: a herd of red deer!” – you might just find yourself enchanted by the local wildlife.

A Unique Transmission Station

“Hello Bandung, can you hear me?” Where the forests give way to open heathlands dotted with drifting sand, the monumental building of the former Radio Kootwijk transmission station rises. The awe hits you immediately when you find yourself in front of this unusually Dutch building, right in the heart of the Veluwe. It’s mostly concrete, slightly eerie, but undeniably unique—a true piece of cultural heritage. Designed in the early 20th century, the station went into operation in 1923. Six years later, Queen Mother Emma inaugurated the telephone service, including connections to the Dutch East Indies. And yes, back then, Bandung heard her loud and clear.

A Bearish Palace

A visit to Paleis Het Loo, just outside Apeldoorn, means more than strolling through all the royal rooms—watch your step over the bear rugs! It’s also a chance to dive into the history of the House of Orange and the Netherlands. You’ll pass through large and small objects spanning the 16th to the 21st century. Two routes guide you through the lives of William and Mary (17th century) and Wilhelmina (19th and 20th centuries). With audio stories, the rooms come alive. And no, you won’t hear the roar of a hunted bear here. Don’t forget to admire the beautiful palace gardens from the rooftop.

Chained

As you stroll through the winding streets of Zutphen, you can hear the calls of the merchants, the clucking of chickens, and the rattling of handcarts. This scene comes easily to mind in the former Hanseatic city with its beautiful, historic old town. Be sure to visit the Walburg Church from the 11th century. Since 1561, the church has also been home to the Librije, a library with 750 old books chained to the reading desks—already a security measure to prevent theft. Only the Italian city of Cesena and Hereford in the UK still have such chained libraries.
