Savour the atmosphere from Ruurlo

Linking one country estate to the next means stylish cycling while admiring elegant manor houses and stories of an aristocratic past. The routes from Ruurlo in the Achterhoek take you past these centuries-old residences, including Vorden Castle and Hackfort Castle. Cycling in noble style, you might almost feel tempted to do so with your little finger raised. The route also leads towards distinguished Zutphen, the centuries-old Hanseatic town with its charming historic centre.

Varied circular routes

During your stay, be sure to visit Ruurlo Castle. This 14th-century castle houses a branch of Museum MORE, the Museum of Dutch Modern Realism. Just outside the village, you can – very carefully – step into a cactus oasis featuring some six hundred different species. You will also enjoy scenic rides to Almen and Gorssel, Laren and Lochem, and Bronkhorst.

A Nice Little Gift

Vorden Castle, situated at the edge of the forest just outside the village of Vorden, was first mentioned in a deed of sale dating back to 1315. Steven van Vorden presented the residence, including all its outbuildings, to his uncle Dirk. Not a bad gift. The castle looked quite different in those days than it does today. The square tower originally formed part of a medieval structure. That tower and the drawbridge still recall its defensive past. Quite a contrast to the more flamboyant Hackfort Castle on the other side of Vorden.

Chained to the Desk

As you wander through the intimate streets of Zutphen, you can almost hear the calls of the merchants, the clucking of chickens and the rumbling of handcarts. It is easy to picture this scene in the former Hanseatic town with its beautiful historic centre. Be sure to visit the 11th-century Walburgis Church. Since 1561, the church has also housed the Librije – a library containing 750 ancient books chained to wooden lecterns, a measure taken (even back then) to prevent theft. Only the Italian town of Cesena and the British city of Hereford still have such chained libraries.

The Smallest City

A town that feels like a village. Or a village that is, in fact, a town. That is how you experience the tiny medieval Bronkhorst, set in the floodplains of the River IJssel. From the ferry at Brummen, you cycle straight into this charming hamlet. In 1482, Bronkhorst was granted city rights, making it the smallest city in the Netherlands. Of the nearby castle, demolished in 1882, only the wooded castle mound and the castle chapel dating from 1345 remain. Inside, several coats of arms are displayed, most likely belonging to noble families who were once locked in fierce disputes.
