An Adventure in Friesland

Boats, farmland, and mischievous antics — these are the key ingredients of your cycling tours through the water-rich landscape of southern Friesland. As you ride through the meadows, breathing in the scent of fresh manure and freshly cut grass, snipes, grebes, oystercatchers, and lapwings all compete loudly for your attention. Meanwhile, the rustling reeds whisper stories of the first book in the beloved adventure series The Skippers of the Kameleon.

Relaxed Cycling

“Halt! Stop! In the name of the law, stand still!” You glance around, startled — but no village constable in sight. So you pedal on in peace. From the Kameleon village of Terherne to Joure, Ossenzijl, Oldemarkt, Beetsterzwaag, and Heerenveen. Along the way, you’ll pass Aldeboarn (Friesland’s oldest village), the eco-cathedral in Mildam, Museum Park Oranjewoud, several terp churches and bell towers, and… the Tjeukemeer. If you’re lucky, you might even spot the twins Hielke and Sietse — the heroes of the series — cruising by in their push boat.

Kameleon Village

Today, Terherne is a popular water sports village with marinas and windsurfing facilities. But in the 19th century, locals were far less happy about its isolated location—especially when once again they had to battle rising waters from the surrounding lakes. They were nicknamed poask (stickleback), a name that reflected the poverty many residents lived in well into the 20th century. Even father Klinkhamer struggled to make ends meet. There was no money to buy a boat for his two children, Hielke and Sietske, so they had to build rafts or try pole vaulting across the ditches—plenty of those around! Visit the Kameleon Village where the beloved children’s book series comes to life.

Royal Forest

Oranjewoud is a royal forest east of Heerenveen. It reveals a collection of former estates with long avenues, parks lined with majestic oaks and beeches, and a few remaining manor houses. You’ll also find ponds and small meadows. In the “Overtuin,” opposite Huize Oranjewoud, you can stroll along winding paths, past artistically trimmed hedges, a serpentine wall, and a herb garden.

Back in Demand

As early as 1200, Aldeboarn — situated on both sides of the Boarne river — was a thriving trading town, bustling with activity. But after years of prosperity came leaner times. When the Middelzee disappeared, so did the town’s trading opportunities. In 1723, lightning struck and destroyed the tower of its 13th-century tuff stone church. Today, Aldeboarn holds the status of a protected village heritage site — and with that, it’s once again attracting many visitors.
