Cycle along the Wadden Sea and the IJsselmeer to Makkum. In the Middle Ages, Makkum was known as the gateway to the Zuiderzee. This favourable location led to great wealth, as evidenced by the monumental merchants' houses in the picturesque centre. You then cycle on to the old Hanseatic town of Bolsward. The town, which once stood on three hills on the former Middelzee, has a beautiful town centre with canals and dozens of monuments. The Sint-Martinus Church from the 15th century is one of the largest and most beautiful Gothic churches in the Netherlands. The church has a gabled roof tower that is characteristic of Friesland. You cycle through the wide polders via Witmarsum and Kimswerd back to Harlingen.
