Frisians are real swietbekken — in other words, they have a sweet tooth. You'll discover this for yourself on day trips from Harlingen and across the islands of Vlieland and Terschelling. On the mainland, you'll cycle along peaceful paths through the polders and past old canals to Bolsward and Franeker, both with historic canals and stately canal houses, and the picturesque town of Makkum. These circular routes also take you through charming villages like Witmarsum, Kimswerd, Wijnaldum, Tzum, and Achlum.
The Wadden Islands are perfect for a refreshing seaside escape. Take a detour to the beach, and be sure to pause for some of the delicious local delicacies. From Fryske Sûkerbôle (Frisian sugar bread) to the famous dúmkes, thumb-sized cookies spiced with aniseed. And to keep the spirit going, tuck a bottle of Beerenburg into your bike bag, perfect for a cosy evening back in your hotel room in Harlingen.
“The end of the world is near!”, a cry heard many times throughout history. One such moment came in 1774, when it was predicted that Earth would be flung out of its orbit. In Friesland, panic spread. But businessman Eise Eisinga remained calm. To prove, like a true Enlightenment thinker, that the Earth stays right where it should, he built a working model of the solar system in his own home. This planetarium — showing the sun and six orbiting planets — still functions to this day. It is the oldest operating planetarium in the world. Address: Eise Eisingastraat 3, Franeker.
Vlieland may have only one village, but boring? Far from it! Just take a stroll down the Dorpsstraat, the main street of Oost-Vlieland, and you'll see why the island is playfully nicknamed “Vliebiza”, a blend of Vlieland and Ibiza. On either side of the street, you’ll find hip restaurants with names like Puur and Gestrand, alongside stylish boutiques and cozy little shops selling colorful hippie accessories, beachwear, and Havaianas. Our tip: after a refreshing walk through the dunes, head to coffee bar Leut (Dorpsstraat 118) and treat yourself to a delicious slice of cranberry cheesecake.
Marvelous Makkum
According to the locals, Makkum is the most beautiful village in Friesland on the IJsselmeer. And to be fair, they’re not entirely wrong. This historic fishing village has a rich history, which you can still clearly see and experience in its old town center. Of all the Frisian villages that have nearly grown into towns, Makkum has the most urban charm. Originally starting as a farming village on a terp (artificial dwelling mound), it later developed into a significant trading settlement. Makkum is also famous for its beautiful pottery, although it is now produced only on a limited scale.
