Frisian Murder Tours

It was drilled into us at school: missionary Boniface was murdered in 754 near Dokkum. During this double-base holiday, you’ll, of course, visit the healing spring and his statue. Above his head, a Bible, which sadly couldn’t prevent the murder. You’ll also cycle to Lauwersmeer National Park. The next day, hop on the ferry to Ameland, with its beautiful nature reserve, the Oerduinen, and the atmospheric villages of Hollum and Ballum.

Famous Spy, Famous Bridge

In Leeuwarden, you’ll, of course, visit the birthplace of the most famous spy in the Netherlands. The next day, take the train to Harlingen, one of the most beautiful cities in Friesland. Then, hop back on the bike to Franeker, home to the famous planetarium of Eise Eisinga. You’ll also pass through Grou and Lauwersmeer National Park, a stunning area with reed lands and marshes. "Hey, is that an otter we just saw?". Finally, cycle along the Eleven Cities Route along the Dokkumer Ee back to Dokkum. And at the famous bridge of Bartlehiem, you’ll come to one conclusion: stunning tours, you'd almost kill for them.

Famous Spy

You don’t have to be a spy to discover that Leeuwarden is eager to reveal its secrets. At Kelders 33 stands the birthplace of Margaretha Geertruida (Griet) Zelle, better known as the spy Mata Hari. She was born here in 1876 and later gained fame as a lady-in-waiting and exotic dancer. During World War I, she was recruited as a spy. She didn’t play this role for long, though. In 1917, the French accused her of double espionage. That cost her her life. But whether she was truly a double agent remains a question. This debate contributed to her legendary status. You can visit the house, and the Fries Museum (Wilhelminaplein 92) also gladly reveals the secrets of this legend.

Distinguished Commandeur Houses

In Hollum on Ameland, robust trees give the main street a distinguished character. This character is further enhanced by the imposing commandeur houses. The commandeurs were the captains of the whaling fleet, a sector that for a long time provided much of Ameland's livelihood. Some of these houses – most of which are protected as monuments – still have blackened facades, charred from the burning of beach wood. Others have been beautifully restored. A typical feature of these houses is the double row of protruding corner stones in the front façade. Anchors in the façade also indicate the year of construction, often between 1650 and 1800.
