Curious in All Directions

From the starting point in Bolsward, it is very easy to awaken your senses. Be curious – nijsgjirrich – about Friesland around this location. During this multi-day cycling holiday, you can take four beautiful tours. For example, to Makkum, with its protected townscape and more than five hundred listed buildings. It is easy to imagine how the small town may have looked in the 17th century. Franeker also invites you to stop – especially at the oldest still functioning planetarium in the world, built by Eise Eisinga. He, too, was nijsgjirrich, in his case about the planets. Google did not exist at the time, so he built this planetarium, where he could, among other things, observe the positions of the planets and predict events such as solar eclipses – all in the 18th century!

Rag Art and Skating History

The other two routes lead to IJlst, Sneek, Terherne, as well as Workum and Hindeloopen. IJlst once thrived on woodworking and shipbuilding. The sawmill De Rat is a remnant of that time. In Workum, a visit to the Jopie Huisman Museum is worthwhile. It honors the rag dealer who, as a painter, gained national fame. His subjects were mainly discarded clothing, old shoes, and other rags. In charming Hindeloopen, you can immerse yourself in Friesland’s skating history. The First Frisian Skating Museum is almost a must-visit; address: Kleine Weide 1.

From Lighthouse to Church

Around the 17th-century town hall of Bolsward stretches a labyrinth of historic streets and canals. Next to the town hall, built in Renaissance style and reminiscent of the heyday of this well-preserved Hanseatic city, it is above all the impressive Martinikerk that captures everyone’s attention. The saddle-roof tower (from 1350) of the church, built in the mid-15th century, once served as a lighthouse when Bolsward was still on the sea. Worth seeing are the pulpit and the grave monument of the poet Gysbert Japicx from the 17th century. Next to the church stands his statue. The famous poet was also the founder of Frisian as a written language.

Our National Drink

A bicycle with a holder for Beerenburg on the handlebars? Then you hit the brakes and step into the shop of the Weduwe Joustra distillery, located on one of Sneek’s most beautiful canals. In 1864, the young widow Anjenette Joustra (hence “Weduwe Joustra”) began producing, among other things, Beerenburg. She did this using the original herbs and the recipe of the inventor Hendrik Beerenburg. More than two centuries earlier, he had sold his herbs in Amsterdam to sailors, who then infused them in genever or brandy. They named the extract after its discoverer: Beerenburg. You can find our national sip at Kleinzand 32.

Adventure Book

From Sneek, you cycle over narrow dikes and crunching shell paths toward the village of Terherne. Avocets, grebes, oystercatchers, and lapwings call over one another to capture your attention. To the right lies a large lake. This is the area where the twins Hielke and Sietse Klinkhamer had their adventures – with their colorfully painted boat, the Kameleon. Here, they also practiced pole vaulting over the ditches. The area has no shortage of canals. Terherne keeps the memory of these twins from the longest-running children’s book series (72 volumes) alive to this day.
