First, you cycle to IJlst, traditionally a town of woodworking and shipbuilding. A remnant of this era is the sawmill De Rat, which is still fully operational. Close to IJlst lies Sneek. This city, which developed from two closely situated terps, was surrounded by fortification walls and canals in the 16th century. The city’s highlight is the Waterpoort from 1613. You then continue cycling to the idyllic Terherne – also known as Kameleon Village – famous for the book series De Kameleon by Hotze de Roos about the twins Sietse and Hielke Klinkhamer. Through the Frisian flatlands, you cycle via Scharnegoutum back to Bolsward.
