Romance Along the Rivers

Deep in your heart, you are a sensitive person. Your romantic heart beats faster when a meandering river appears at the edge of the forest or an imposing castle rises behind a rolling meadow. You can hear the clashing of armor in the distance—or perhaps a maiden calls out longingly to a knight from a turret window. During this 7-day cycling tour, your romantic heart will be fully satisfied. It all begins just outside Wageningen with the sight of Castle Doorwerth.

Bed and Book Chest

The journey continues along the Lower Rhine, Waal, Meuse, Merwede, Linge, and Lek. You will regularly take a ferry to cross the rivers. The knightly romance continues at Castle Nederhemert, whose oldest parts date back to the 13th century. The bed of the famous general Maarten van Rossem once stood here. And the book chest that Hugo de Groot used to escape? You can admire it in the robust Castle Loevestein.

“Skipper, may I cross?”

Culture is also abundant on this tour. ’s-Hertogenbosch impresses with its enormous St. John's Basilica, and Dordrecht boasts over a thousand monuments in its historic city center. All of this is set within a beautiful natural environment. Cycling along the rivers, you can breathe in the freshness of the water, especially in National Park De Biesbosch. And then comes the last ferry crossing: “Boatman, may I cross?”

Ode to Woudrichem

Old Love… Two elegantly written words on a red sign in the very old center of the fortified town of Woudrichem. The sign is part of an almost antique bike rack, holding a completely blue women’s bicycle. The historic stepped gables of the Hoogstraat create a romantic backdrop. The sight makes you stop and think, above all, of what a Greek poet said a very, very long time ago: poetry is speaking painting. And that, in turn, sounds like music to the ears. Jan Klassen, the trumpeter in the Prince’s army, thought so too. He is buried nearby, and his statue stands next to the old church.

Impressive Oldie

Our old St. John's, well, it really is something… A carnival hit from the past already said it: you don’t just cycle past the St. John's in ’s-Hertogenbosch. The enormous 14th-century basilica (1380) is the city’s Gothic showpiece. The cathedral impresses with both its size and its enormous wealth of sculpture. The roof alone consists of 700,000 slates, and the number of sculptures inside and outside approaches six hundred. Inside, be sure to also admire the choir stalls with their 15th-century woodcarvings. The baptismal font dates from 1492, the pulpit from 1550, and the organ from 1620.

Monumental Dordrecht

The stately merchant houses on the Groenmarkt in Dordrecht reveal a glorious past. This includes the former residence of businessman Simon van Gijn. The entrepreneur was a passionate collector. After his death in 1922, he left the house and the majority of his collections to create a museum. The interior, however, had to remain as intact as possible. The grand hall, which has been used for receptions and events since its creation in 1730, still exudes grandeur. A striking contrast to the rough life in the harbor right outside. Although the bustling trade has now quieted down, with a little imagination you can still hear the cacophony of loading and unloading.
