Wertheim

On the edge of the Spessart Nature Park, where the Tauber flows into the Main, lies the romantic town of Wertheim. The hotel is located close to the charming old town. Medieval alleyways, half-timbered houses, quaint squares, and the impressive castle ruin take you back in time. On sunny days, you can dine on the terrace by the Tauber River. Wertheim is ideal for cyclists; the bike routes take you in all directions, and sometimes you can return by train or boat. Cycle west along the beautiful meanders of the Main to the half-timbered town of Miltenberg, south through the Tauber valley, east to the lively old town of Würzburg, and north to Marktheidenfeld, among the vineyards of Franconia.

Wertheim

Route A - Miltenberg (35 or 64 km)

You follow the winding Main downstream through the typical Spessart landscape of red sandstone and dark green hill forests. Along the way, you pass the picturesque castle ruins of Stadtprozelten and Freudenberg. In Miltenberg, you can take a lovely circular walk through the well-preserved old town with its gates, half-timbered houses, charming market square, churches, chapel, monastery, and castle. For the return journey, you have the option to take the train back or cycle back over the Freudenberg. On this route, after a climb through a landscape reminiscent of Austria, you return to your accommodation.

Route B - Bad Mergentheim (40 or 51 km)

Heading south, you follow the small Tauber River. After ten kilometers, on the opposite side of the valley, you will see the beautifully situated Bronnbach Monastery, where you can take a break and visit the church interior with its cloister. After passing the rustic villages of Gamburg and Niklaushausen, the valley widens, the forests give way, and you catch sight of the church and castle tower of the charming town of Tauberbischofsheim. You continue through the quaint half-timbered town of Lauda and finally arrive at the spa town of Bad Mergentheim, with the impressive castle that was home to the Teutonic Order for many years.

Route C - Marktheidenfeld (43km)

Where the Main makes a large loop near Wertheim, you cross the river. A climb then takes you up to the forested Eichberg, after which a descent brings you back to the river. You cross the Main again at Lengfurt, with a view from the bridge of the large Triefenstein monastery complex. The beautiful old town of Marktheidenfeld marks the turning point. It’s a great place to relax on the terraces of the market square or along the Main quay. The return journey follows entirely along the left bank of the Main, passing the wine village of Homburg.

Route D - Würzburg (43km)

From the small Main village of Bettingen, you cycle east along a side stream valley – an easy and peaceful route upstream. After a gentle climb through Waldbüttelbrunn, you descend through a deciduous forest and a suburb of Höchberg. The unexpected view of the mighty Marienberg Fortress and the city of Würzburg is overwhelming. You descend through vineyards to the well-known Main bridge and the historic old town of Würzburg. For the return, you can take the train back via Lauda.

Bonus: For the day of arrival, we have prepared a short circular walk for you. You walk up to the impressive castle ruin, from where you have a magnificent view. Then you head a little south through the hillside forest before descending. Walking along the Tauber, you return to Wertheim and the hotel terrace.
