Dripping Romance

To start with a cliché: romance drips from the half-timbered façades everywhere. Wertheim is not for nothing located along the Romantic Road. The town – on the edge of the Spessart Nature Park, where the Tauber flows into the Main – is full of medieval alleyways, half-timbered houses, and small squares, and also boasts an impressive castle ruin. Particularly delightful are the beautiful cycling routes in the surrounding area. That promises a lot of fun.

East, West…

Sometimes a route will take you somewhere by bike, after which you can return comfortably by train or even by boat, for example to the picturesque town of Miltenberg. This makes the cycling days varied and enjoyable. Cycle west along the beautiful meanders of the Main to the half-timbered town of Miltenberg, or south through the Tauber valley. To the east lies the lovely Würzburg – also dripping with romance – with its charming old town. And to the north, you can visit Marktheidenfeld, amidst the vineyards of Franconia.

Walking through Wertheim

Back early from a round trip? The old town of Wertheim, just above the confluence of the Tauber, is mainly made up of medieval alleyways – and you can never get enough of them. Walking through the little streets, you’ll notice that the old half-timbered houses jut out from the first floor. The streets will inevitably lead you to the old church and the castle. Also worth visiting are the Engelsbrunnen and the Late Gothic Kilian Chapel. And the small Rococo castle in the Hofgarten in Wertheim-Eichel houses a porcelain collection and 19th-century art collections.

Wonderful Würzburg

From the Netherlands, Würzburg lies at the beginning of the Romantic Road, which immediately sets the tone for what you can expect. No more knights holding the first tournament on German soil here in 1127. And no witch trials, which were particularly intense here in the seventeenth century. So what is there? Many churches – that’s what you get with an old bishopric city. Also many wine taverns where you can meet students late into the night. They contribute to a lively atmosphere in the city. On the market, be sure to check out the Haus zum Falken with its Rococo façade from 1751. And don’t miss the Würzburg Residence, which was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list as early as 1981.
