Provence and Camargue

A highly varied journey through the lower Rhône Valley to the Mediterranean Sea, taking you through a rolling Provençal landscape dotted with charming villages, vineyards, and cultural gems. This is where Van Gogh, Picasso, Cézanne, and Renoir were drawn to the Mediterranean’s local colour. And where the Popes of Avignon built their grand palace, just to name one highlight. And that’s not even mentioning the Roman ruins, the flamingos, and the wild horses. » read more about Provence and Camargue

Joie de vivre in the South of France

Want to enjoy life in France? Where better than in the southern Provence and the adjacent Camargue? As you cycle, you’ll dive into numerous plus beaux villages de France, stunning villages where the clink of metal boules echoes off the walls of tranquil squares. You take a seat on a terrace in the shade of a characterful café. Une crème, madame, monsieur? A delightful pick-me-up — perfect for pedaling on.

Pulling Out All the Stops

Touring along country roads and through fields full of fragrant lavender and vibrant sunflowers, both regions pull out all the stops. You’ll ride from Tavel to Avignon with its imposing papal palace, to Tarascon and Arles — famous for Van Gogh and its still-impressive Roman arena. Then back via Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, Nîmes, and the striking Pont du Gard to Uzès. The extended version of the trip includes rest days, allowing for local excursions — for example, to see the white horses of the Camargue or the plains around Nîmes. In short, cycling through the most quintessentially French region of France. Alors, on y va.

Beaux villages

There’s no shortage of sunflowers — or beaux villages. On the way to Arles, you're bound to pass several. Park your bike where a café fills the air with the scent of coffee and it’s easy to unwind in the shade of an ancient olive tree. Avignon, with the famous “Sur le Pont…” and the mighty Palais des Papes, is also on the route. Want to soak up even more culture? Visit the Roman amphitheatre in Arles and the beautiful historic center of Uzès.

Hats Off to the Romans

The impressive Pont du Gard is a Roman aqueduct built between 40 and 60 AD. This structure — 48 meters high and 275 meters long — spans the Gard River and supplied the city of Nîmes with water for six centuries. The bridge has three tiers, with the top level carrying the water. It’s the largest aqueduct from Roman times. In 1985, the Pont du Gard was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list. See it for yourself and you’ll agree — the Romans knew how to build. Hats off to them.

The Many Faces of Arles

Fashion designer Christian Lacroix grew up in Arles and once said: “The city is both popular and grand, provincial and aristocratic, Christian and pagan, humble and proud.” Perhaps that’s why Vincent van Gogh felt so at home here. He painted his famous sunflowers in Arles — and also The Bedroom. Lean your bike against the yellow façade of Café Van Gogh and explore the spots where the artist found his inspiration. The art museum La Fondation Van Gogh features several of his works.

Routes

A highly varied journey through the lower Rhône Valley to the Mediterranean Sea, cycling through a rolling Provençal landscape with charming villages, vineyards, and many beautiful cultural sites. This is the region where Van Gogh, Picasso, Cézanne, and Renoir settled, drawn by the Mediterranean couleur locale. Of course, the routes include the beautiful and lively papal city of Avignon, the ‘Roman’ city of Nîmes, and the impressive Pont du Gard. But lesser-known towns like Tarascon and Uzès also have plenty to offer. In the middle part of the holiday, you explore the watery natural reserve of the Camargue. You cycle past lagoons with flamingos and other waterbirds, through fields home to the characteristic black fighting bulls and white horses of the Camargue.
