Vive-le-Mayenne Cycling Holiday

The Mayenne, nestled between Normandy, Brittany, and the Loire Valley, is defined by its traditional bocage landscape — a patchwork of meadows enclosed by hedgerows and tree-lined earth banks. Many castles and manor houses here remain privately inhabited. Deeply carved stream and river valleys add to the region's scenic variety, with the gentle Mayenne River winding gracefully through it all. A truly idyllic cycling destination, waiting to be explored from your base in Mézangers.

Five Delightful Day Rides

Five circular routes have been carefully mapped out, taking you to places like Montourtier, Montsûrs, and Évron. In summer, the gardens of Château de la Roche Pichemer open their gates to visitors. Évron also features a beautiful abbey church. Another day leads to the fortified medieval town of Sainte-Suzanne, complete with a real castle. Pedalling through the hilly Les Coëvrons area brings you to Jublains, famous for its impressive Roman remains. Then there’s Laval — easily worth an entire afternoon of exploring. And yet, so much more awaits on this Vive le Mayenne cycling holiday.

Medieval Laval

Set along the banks of the Mayenne River, Laval was founded in the 11th century and boasts a rich history reflected in its remarkable heritage. Until 1794, the Vieux-Château served as the residence of the Counts of Laval. Today, this imposing medieval castle, flanked by a massive round keep, houses the Museum of Naive Art, home to works by local painter Henri Rousseau—one of Europe’s finest collections in this genre. The medieval center enchants visitors with its timber-framed facades, the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity (Trinité), Rousseau’s birthplace, and remnants of the old city walls with two preserved towers.

Suzanne, the Heart-Stealer

Nestled in the bocage landscape of the Mayenne lies Sainte-Suzanne, a medieval hilltop town ranked among Les Plus Beaux Villages de France. Behind its fortified walls, charming alleyways lead you to the remarkable Musée de l’Auditoire, housed in a 17th-century courtroom. This museum brings the town’s history to life with detailed models, authentic artifacts, and weaponry from the Hundred Years' War. Among its treasures is the oldest suit of armor in France (1410–1430). Spread across nine rooms, the collection spans 3,000 years of history. Though Sainte-Suzanne withstood the attacks of William the Conqueror, today it conquers something else entirely: the hearts of all who visit.
