Joie-de-vivre under the sun

For many, Provence is the land of summer, but with its blooming sunflowers and swaying poppies, the region is just as enchanting in other seasons. You’ll see this for yourself on your ride to Arles. Along the way, the Roman aqueduct and the imposing abbey ruins of St. Pierre de Montmajour seem to wave you on. “Bonjour madame, monsieur en vélo.”

In Van Gogh’s footsteps

Even the sunflowers greet you warmly. In Arles, visit Van Gogh’s famous yellow café. And on your loop ride to St.-Rémy-de-Provence, you’ll follow even more of his footsteps. The monastic hospital St. Paul de Mausole, where Van Gogh spent a year in care, still shows his room. An exhibition tells the story of his stay and the many works he created there. A walking route also leads past the places he painted.

So much more

But Provence offers even more. The seven cycling routes and two additional walking trails take you to peaceful villages, castles, the last steppe of Europe, a perfume museum, ancient abbeys, and Roman amphitheaters... The list goes on. It's all about enjoying life—under the southern French sun.

From Art Café to Arena

Arles compels you to lean your bike against the yellow façade of Van Gogh’s Café. Start with a coffee, then explore the many places where the painter found inspiration. The art museum La Fondation Van Gogh houses several of his works. Looking for more culture? The Musée Réattu, located in a Renaissance palace, features beautiful pieces, including works by Picasso. And of course, you can’t miss the Roman showpiece: the amphitheatre, reminiscent of the Colosseum in Rome. Built in the first century, it hosted chariot races and hand-to-hand combat.

Birthplace of a Magical Seer

Ever heard of Nostradamus? Michel de Nostredame, to be precise, was born on December 14, 1503, in St-Rémy-de-Provence. He later became a physician and apothecary, but gained fame as an astrologer and seer. As a prophet, he made predictions reaching as far into the future as the year 3797. He wrote them all down and… many came true: the Great Fire of London in 1666, Louis Pasteur’s discovery of microbes in 1886, and even the 9/11 attacks in 2001. All in his famously cryptic wording. Strange—and a little eerie—how many of his prophecies were fulfilled. Thankfully, not the end of the world in 1999. So, feel free to visit his birthplace in peace.
