Cycling holiday Flemish Limburg

This cycling tour takes you through the Flemish part of Limburg, specifically the Haspengouw region (known in French as “Hesbaye”). The area is richly dotted with castles and wine estates, imposing abbeys and churches, rolling landscapes, vineyards, and endless apple orchards.
In this triangle formed by Hasselt, the city of speculoos, Roman Tongeren, and abbey town Sint-Truiden, it’s pure Flemish-Burgundian delight with cookies, Roman stews, wines, and abbey beers.

In a lower gear

Centuries melt together in an oasis of peace. The Beguinage of Tongeren reveals houses, water wells, public buildings, and a brewery from the 17th century. The oldest house dates back to 1622. And the fact that all of this still exists is thanks to the beguines of that time. Because they weren’t bound to a monastic order, they didn’t have to remain poor. This allowed them to pay protection money to the advancing Spanish armies in 1677. As a result, the soldiers spared their Beguinage while much of the rest of Tongeren was burned down. On the second day of the tour, you’ll visit this oldest city in Belgium.

Sturdy fortresses, elegant pleasure gardens

You began in Hasselt with a short loop through the Kempen region. That this beautiful and fertile landscape gave rise to mighty abbeys, sturdy fortresses, and elegant pleasure gardens becomes clear on your very first day of cycling. You visit the Bokrijk Arboretum and the medieval Herkenrode Abbey. You surrender to the region’s rhythm and shift into a lower gear. And so, after Tongeren, Sint-Truiden—capital of the Haspengouw—appears with ease.

Herkenrode

A little jenever

For a Hasselt jenever, head to the city’s oldest café: De Kleine Hal at Maastrichterstraat 30. “Ask for a witteke in Antwerp and you’ll get white beer,” says the owner. “Here, we serve a little jenever.” And there are many kinds—lemon, berry, apple, and aged grain. The production process, from grain to glass, is explained in the Jenever Museum. There, you’ll find copper stills, vintage bottles, and a tasting room packed to the brim with every jenever made in Belgium. Address: Witte Nonnenstraat 19.

One grand treasure chamber

Just before the start of our era, Julius Caesar had his military camps set up here. The Gallo-Roman Museum presents the period during which Tongeren was founded, with columns, everyday objects, statues, ceramic pots, jewelry… The soil beneath Tongeren seems to be one grand treasure chamber. But the same goes for the ground beneath the 13th-century basilica on the Grote Markt. During excavations, archaeologists discovered the remains of no fewer than seven churches built atop one another—including graves and a Roman bathhouse. Today, you can wander through and explore the remains, meters underground. Check galloromeinsmuseum.be and teseum.be.
