In Leuven, you’ll come across the statue of the White, the village boy from Zichem who caused quite a stir with his pranks. But that’s not the whole story yet. At the start of this tour, you cycle through the land of the White, created by the renowned Flemish author Ernest Claes. After passing Aarschot and the hills of Hageland, you’ll arrive in the village of Zichem. Then comes the Maria pilgrimage site of Scherpenheuvel. A quick prayer, and then it’s back on the road.
The land of the cheerful people also takes you to Diest, with the tomb of Prince Philip William of Orange. You bump along the cobblestones to the expansive and also very beautiful Beguinage. Phew, time to get off the saddle. You’re glad to park your bike under the 17th-century Rubensian entrance gate. You stroll through the quiet streets around the large church dedicated to Saint Catherine. "Her help was sought for fire and skin ailments," you hear a local guide say. Secretly, you wonder if that also applied to saddle sores.
The city is small, cozy, lively, snug, and bustling all at once. In addition to the busy terraces on the Oude Markt and the charming restaurants in Muntstraat, Leuven offers a beautiful Beguinage, an almost car-free center, which undoubtedly enhances the relaxed atmosphere. Due to the short route on the final day, there’s plenty of time for a 5 km loop around all the main sights of the city, such as the town hall, the station, the old university buildings, and the Norbertine Abbey. And in the evening? You can enjoy a drink at one of the many cafés around the Oude Markt. These are collectively known as the ‘longest bar’ in Flanders. Allez, why not have another white beer.
For centuries, the Dutch royals have been buried in the Nieuwe Kerk in Delft. A notable absentee is the first son of William of Orange: Philip William. For that, you have to go to the Belgian town of Diest, just east of Mechelen. At the age of eleven, William was kidnapped by the Duke of Alva and taken to Spain. There, he received his upbringing and education at the Spanish court. After his father’s death, he inherited the title of Prince of Orange. However, it wasn’t until he was 42 that he was allowed to return to the Netherlands. With the title, but without further power. He then lived in Breda, French Orange, and Belgian Brussels and Diest. At his own request, he was buried in the St. Sulpitius Church in Diest.
