From Baby to Adult

Following a river from its source to its mouth is like watching a newborn sprout grow day by day, from baby to adult. Cycling along the Meuse is no different, although on this journey you experience only a part of that growth—especially when cycling from Sedan in France, through Belgium, to Maastricht in the Netherlands. River cycling routes are popular, and this one is no exception. The terrain is often pleasantly flat, making the ride extra relaxing.

Most Beautiful in Europe

In France, you’ll experience the stunning section known as the Voie Verte Trans-Ardennes. In Belgium, be sure to stop in Liège, Namur, and Dinant with its elevated citadel (don’t worry—you can take a gondola up). Or visit one of the many charming castles and country estates. Want to go back to ‘childhood’? You can start your journey in Maastricht and follow the river all the way to Sedan, encountering occasionally steep slopes and cliffs right beside you. This cycling route was previously named the most beautiful in Europe.

Beautiful View, Beautiful Meuse

Nestled against rocky cliffs and located along the Meuse, Dinant is one of the most beautiful places in Wallonia. This charming town will definitely make you want to stop during your journey along the early Meuse. Of course, take a ride on the cable car that takes you up to the elevated Citadel for a stunning view, including the birthplace of Adolphe Sax, the inventor of the saxophone—and of course, the beautiful Meuse itself.

Letters to the Late Arthur

Have you ever heard of Arthur Rimbaud? Ask the French, and the answer is a wholehearted: Oui! Born in Charleville-Mézières (1854), the wandering Arthur became a famous and beloved poet, especially in France. The city now honors him in every possible way. Many restaurants, hotels, and artworks bear his name. There are even two museums dedicated to him. Although Arthur left the city at a young age for Paris and beyond, he is buried here again. Fans write letters to him and drop them in the mailbox at the entrance of the cemetery.

Masterful Maastricht

Thanks to its compact city center, you’re quickly at the masterful highlights of Maastricht. The impressive St. Servatius Basilica, for example. Or Polare, the unique bookstore housed in the over 700-year-old Dominican Church. According to the leading newspaper The Guardian, it is ‘the most unique bookstore in the world.’ Cultural treasures are certainly not lacking. The entire center of Maastricht is a protected historic district. The monumental buildings and beautiful townhouses contribute to the unique ambiance. And in between? Stylish streets with elegant boutiques, luxury shops, and numerous restaurants and cafés to relax in. With vlaai, of course!
