The 325 km route from Passau in Germany to Vienna runs on both sides of the Danube. Your route description tells you where the traffic is quieter or even car-free. It looks like Hansel and Gretel’s cottage – a riot of colors and shapes. But Friedensreich Hundertwasser’s house wasn’t built as a fairytale home, but as a modern apartment complex. The irregular forms and whimsical details make this piece of architecture truly unconventional. The staircase is topped by an onion-shaped dome, and the rooftop gardens are lushly planted with hundreds of trees and shrubs. With this creation, the philosopher and artist rejected the formal and sterile buildings typically seen in Vienna.

A small ferry takes you across the river at Engelhartszell. The village’s modest church is charming, often welcoming visitors with open doors. Even more impressive is the baroque Stift Engelszell just a bit further on – Austria’s only Trappist monastery. Charming Grein is home to beautiful 16th-century buildings, many adorned with ornate baroque façades. There's also a castle offering five-star views over the Danube and a museum dedicated to river navigation. A must-see is the 1791 Stadttheater. Narrow hallways and creaking stairs lead to rooms filled with hats, costumes, masks, velvet, feathers and vintage photos. Among the wooden rows of seats in this miniature theatre, a clever little chamber pot was hidden. Its door was made from two fabric strips, allowing one to follow the performance through the slit while tending to other business.
