Must-see along the Danube

During your cycling journey along the Danube to Vienna, there are plenty of stops worth making. For that reason, keep a close eye on the time—otherwise, with so many sights along the way, you might arrive at your hotel late every evening. Be sure to visit the Abbey of Melk. The monastery complex still radiates the grandeur of the mighty emperors of the past. Although you can only see four parts—the modest museum, the marble hall, the centuries-old library, and the overwhelming monastery church—our advice is: a definite must-see!

Highlights

This “must-see” starts in Passau. Then the highlights come thick and fast: the Trappist monastery at Engelhartszell, the Schlögener Schlinge (the sharp bend in the river where nature is at its most beautiful), Baroque Linz, the picturesque town of Grein, the unique Wachau wine region, and the Roman flower city Tulln. And we haven’t even mentioned Vienna yet.

Wachau World Heritage

Green hills, sturdy castles, and cozy villages where geraniums lavishly hang from wooden balconies. The Danube offers you culture, history, and wine. The Wachau is such a beautiful wine region that UNESCO declared this part of the Danube a World Heritage Site. In the area between Melk and Krems, forests were cleared as early as the Neolithic period, but it wasn’t until around 800 AD that the landscape was radically transformed. Bavarian and Salzburg monasteries began cultivating the slopes of the Wachau, creating the pattern of terraced vineyards that is still visible today.

Nibble, nibble, little mouse

It looks like the house from Hansel and Gretel; a feast of colors and shapes. But Friedensreich Hundertwasser’s house wasn’t built as a fairy-tale cottage, but as a contemporary apartment complex. The irregular shapes and imaginative details make this art piece highly unconventional. The stairwell is crowned with an onion-shaped roof, and the rooftop gardens are lushly planted with hundreds of trees and shrubs. With this complex, the philosopher and artist rebelled against the formal and sterile buildings typically constructed in Vienna. Address: Löwengasse/Kegelgasse.

Extra time for the baroque theatre

In the town square, Grein shows you a baroque theatre from 1790 and a ‘Rathaus’ (town hall) dating back to 1562. These buildings are so old that woodworms might have even stared right into Empress Sissi’s faded face. Faded? Yes indeed—this was where the beautiful empress suffered a shipwreck. This marks the start of the stretch once dreaded by every skipper: the Strudengau. “Struden” refers to “Strudel,” meaning whirlpool. After narrowly missing a cliff, the empress’s ship ran aground here. The end of a beautiful boat trip—but on the bright side, she got extra time to visit the baroque theatre.
