5 Intoxicating cities to visit: cycling and enjoying Europe
There is no better time to visit a city than in spring or autumn. The summer season with its heat waves is over and the pleasant temperatures make it wonderful to walk around, enjoy the facades and relax on cosy terraces. We present 5 cities where you will definitely want to get off your bike and park it. Cities where you can be still, sing, dance, get lost and smile. And as a bonus, we share our secret destinations that you should definitely discover.
Prague never disappoints
Prague is often called the golden city, and for good reason. This city has an enormous wealth of architectural masterpieces, from Baroque and Rococo to Gothic and Romanesque. The churches and palaces are strung together like an elegant necklace. A harmonious symphony that would make composers Smetana and Mozart jealous. Visit the Tyl Theatre, which has dominated the image of Rytirska Street for some three hundred years. The magnificent neoclassical interior of this 18th-century theatre was used as a backdrop in the award-winning film Amadeus. If only the young Mozart had known when his Don Giovanni premiered here on 29 October 1787.
Discover Prague's unique heritage
Theatres such as the Tyl Theatre, together with all those impressive museums, historic bridges, beautiful panoramas, narrow alleys and imposing squares, form Prague's unique heritage. That is why Prague never disappoints. It is therefore difficult to leave this city. But when you cycle along the Elbe, you know that beautiful Dresden awaits you. Winding your way along the Elbe, you conclude wistfully that Prague is a city where the inhabitants know how to live life. Like a symphony that leaves you speechless.
Salzburg: the sound of music
In Salzburg, the music still seems to linger in the air. After all these years, Salzburg is still the city of The Sound of Music. Anyone who has seen the hit film a hundred times will recognise almost every corner, alley or city park as the backdrop for the skipping Maria and her equally musical children. Just like in the film, Salzburg is still the city of the famous Salzburg Festival. But it is also the city of Mozart. His birthplace (partly a museum) is located in Getreidegasse, Salzburg's main street with richly decorated signs on the 17th and 18th-century facades.
Explore enchanting Venice
Even with a compass, it's easy to get lost in Venice. But that's no problem, because the city has a surprise in store at every corner. Wandering through Venice is like strolling through a large museum, with winding alleys, cosy squares and the occasional echoing gondolier. You have to do it at least once in your life: sail through the canals of Venice by gondola. Make it a wonderful trip, through the Grand Canal, where 220 palaces impress visitors every day, past Marco Polo's house, the Doge's Palace and under the Bridge of Sighs.
Discover the art and culture of Florence
Art is the most normal thing in the world in Florence. This is not surprising when you consider that the city has been home to Michelangelo, Da Vinci and Donatelli, to name but three from a long list of artists. Florence is therefore primarily a city for art and culture lovers, with a distinctly medieval character around the Palazzo Vecchio. The historic centre is easy to explore on foot. It is impossible to get lost, as the huge dome of the Duomo Sante Maria del Fiore serves as a beacon. Climb the dome for a fantastic view of the city. Of course, you can also stroll past the shops on the covered Ponte Vecchio, the “old bridge” over the Arno. And you can brave the long queue in front of the Uffizi Museum with its more than 1,500 works of art by countless famous masters. But besides all these masterpieces, the city has much more to offer. Look around, enjoy the street life and chuckle at all those chic ladies and fashionable machos.
