GPS: Global Positioning System
Advantages of GPS
Despite the care we put into our route descriptions, the directions can sometimes be complex. GPS technology offers significant advantages, while allowing you to fully enjoy your surroundings. In the best-case scenario, it feels as though you are simply following a clearly signposted route.
At any moment, you can see exactly where you are — usually on the route as we have described it, but also if you choose to take an alternative path and temporarily deviate from the route. Distances to towns and restaurants are also clearly displayed.
What is GPS?
Satellites orbiting the Earth transmit signals that are received by a GPS device. Using these signals, your exact position on Earth can be determined with great accuracy — usually within 5 to 10 metres. By connecting a series of points, a route is created that you can follow while cycling or walking, similar to following a marked route on a map.
Cycling with GPS
You can also use a GPS device while cycling. Following a cycling route with GPS is very convenient. The device is slightly larger than a mobile phone and can be mounted on your handlebars. Even for GPS users, the printed maps provide a helpful additional overview of the route. In wet or heavily overcast weather, the GPS signal may occasionally be weaker. In that case, it is useful to refer to the route description or map.
For which routes are GPS-tracks available?
Over the past few years, we have made a large number of our trips suitable for GPS. You can find these trips with GPS tracks by ticking “GPS” in the search filter. This will show all destinations where GPS tracks are available. If GPS tracks are available for a trip, you will see the GPS logo in the general trip information.
How do I book a cycling holiday with GPS-tracks?
If you book a trip for which GPS tracks are available, you do not need to take any further action. The GPS tracks will be automatically made available in the route app we use, from where you can easily download them.
