Cycling holiday Dutch waterline

The New Holland Waterway made the west of the Netherlands inaccessible to the enemy between 1815 and 1940. If necessary, the sometimes five-kilometre-wide stretch could be flooded to knee height: too high to walk, too low to sail. Fortunately, the land is dry today. This makes cycling between Weesp and Gorinchem a wonderful experience.

Routes

The waterline is a unique and typically Dutch defence system that made it possible to flood large areas of land. It was too shallow for the enemy to navigate and too deep to wade through. On this cycle tour, you will follow the main water lines and pass many impressive forts. As the forts were not allowed to be built on, nature was given free rein.
