Weinviertel & Iron Curtain Trail
Day 1 - Arrival in RetzThe central square of Retz is one of the largest and most beautiful market squares in Austria. Below the town lies a corridor of wine cellars with a total of 20 kilometers. You spend the night in a comfortable wellness hotel. Day 2 - Retz tour - 22 kmThe first cycle route is quite short, so you have enough time to visit the wine cellars under Retz and enjoy the spa facilities in your hotel. Follow the Iron Curtain Trail on border roads. It is hard to imagine that this peaceful landscape on the border was recently a heavily guarded no-man's-land that separated the communist Eastern bloc from the West. From the Czech town of Šatov you cycle through the vineyards and along the edge of the Podyjí National Park back to Retz.Day 3 - Retz to Laa an der Thaya - 51 kmFollowing the Iron Curtain Trail you will leave Retz. You cycle through rolling vineyards, many picturesque cellar gasses (narrow streets with wine cellars) and along the castle of Seefeld. Just before Yaroslavice you will cross the Czech border and you will be in Moravia. On a former patrol road you reach Laa aan der Thaya on the Austrian side of the border, with a moated castle and a thermal spa.Day 4 - Laa an der Thaya to Valtice - 46 kmSwinging through a varied arable landscape you reach the Galgenberg, a hill surrounded by vineyards and wine cellars. After a short climb you will return to Moravia in Czech Republic and descend to beautiful Mikulov. The castle with its baroque gardens and the square in the old center are particularly impressive. You leave Mikulov on the Freedom Trail, where the stories are told of people who tried to pass the Iron Curtain. Just before Valtice you will pass the Iron Curtain Museum, located in a former customs office. In Valtice - the Czech wine capital - you will find a beautiful baroque castle that was the residence of the reigning princes of Liechtenstein for 700 years.Day 5 - Valtice tour 27 km + Veltice to Poysdorf - 19 kmYou start with a tour through the cultural landscape of Lednice - Valtice, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996. Partly on unpaved paths through a wooded and wetland nature reserve you cycle to the castle of Lednice. Around this summer residence of the Princes of Liechtenstein is a large park in English landscape style. Along other buildings built by the princes, including a temple and a hunting lodge, you cycle back to Valtice.
Then you leave Valtice while climbing and you pass the Austrian border. From a panoramic road you look out over the fields and the vineyards. You will reach Poysdorf, largely on winding roads through the vineyards. Day 6 - Poysdorf to Mailberg - 51 kmFollowing the Grüner Veltliner cycle route you will leave Poysdorf through the vineyards. From afar you can see the castle of Staatz situated amidst the rolling fields on a lonely mountain. With some spicy climbs you cycle through farming villages to the old wine region around Mailberg. Here you will sleep in a beautifully maintained 12th century castle.Day 7 - Mailberg to Retz - 51 kmFrom your castle hotel you cycle right between the vineyards with again endless views. Initially you follow the Portugese cycle route and then you arrive through an open landscape of sunflowers and pumpkins at the lookout tower on the Sandberg, an important Celtic settlement 2000 years ago. From here you follow the Weinviertel DAC cycle route over the rolling wine hills back to Retz.Day 8 - Departure or extensionYour tour ends after breakfast. You can of course extend your tour with an extra night in Retz.
