Maaseik

Hotel Castle WürfeldA - Tour to Sittard - 43 kmOn the other side of the Maas, where the Netherlands is narrowest, lies the town of Susteren with a beautiful Romanesque stilt church. You then cycle on to Sittard, one of the oldest and greenest cities in the Netherlands. You cycle back to Maaseik via the east bank of the Maas, past the hamlets of Illikhoven and Visserweert. B - Round trip to Thorn - 43 / 49 kmAlong the Aldeneik vineyard and natural gravel ponds you follow the Maas to the white town of Thorn. From the Middle Ages to the French Revolution, this former abbey principality managed to preserve its sovereignty. The abbey church stands on the highest point and dominates the white houses around. The noble canons and their court lived here. Along the large inland port of Maasbracht (with shipping museum) you drive back to Wurfeld Castle. C - Tour to the Hoge Kempen National Park - 42 / 49 kmYou make a tour through the beautiful Belgian Hoge Kempen National Park with forests, moors and stream valleys. But also along traces from the miners' past, the closed coal mines with shaft towers, gravel mountains, train tracks and the typical garden neighborhoods. In Maasmechelen you can visit a traditional miner's home. D - Tour to the Kempenbroek border land park - 53 kmA drive through the Kempenbroek borderland park, a stream flowing through streams, farmland with wind and water mills. Quiet roads wind along the nature reserves Jagersborg, Itterbeekvallei, 't Koelerheike, De Luysen and Stamprooierbroek. For a pleasant stay you can visit a number of rural taverns or the attractive village centers of Tongerlo, Opitter (brewery) or the old town of Bree. E - Through the Maasdal to Maastricht - 48 / 59 kmYou follow the winding course of the Maas, a delightful stream landscape with lovely villages and castles. The weaving museum can be visited in Stokkem. Stein (archaeological museum) or a little further Elsloo (regional museum, skippers' fair) is your turning point. You will return on the other bank. On the long route variant you follow the Maas to Maastricht. After visiting this Burgundian city, take the train to Echt for the last bit of cycling to your hotel.
