From Luang Prabang to Hanoi

Dag 1 - Tour Luang Prabang - 32 km
Today you will make a tour to the east. The route takes you on a dirt road first to Santi Chedi, from where you have a beautiful view of Luang Prabang. You will then pass through Ban Phanom, which is known for cotton and silk weaving. After Ban Phanom you follow the banks of the Nam Khan, where the tomb of the French explorer Henri Mahout, the "discoverer" of Angkor Wat for the western world, stands. You can visit the tomb. It is possible to make a trip on an elephant today. You must book this one day in advance. As a break place you can visit the Lao Spirit or the Zen Resort which have good restaurants with beautiful views of the mountains on the other side of the Nam Khan. After the resort you cycle back to Luang Prabang via the paved road.
Day 2 - Around Luang Prabang - 40 / 60 kmThis tour in Luang Prabang takes you to the beautiful Kuang Si waterfall. Via a few villages with different ethnic groups you cycle through hilly terrain with a few short but tough climbs. Since the road ends, you have to go back the same way. You can also charter a boat (about 40 US $) that will take you over the Mekong in about an hour and a half to 10 km from the waterfall. If you want to do this, you can arrange and pay for this at the reception of your guesthouse. It is possible to swim at the waterfall and there are some simple eateries in the parking lot. Day 3 - Transfer and cycle to Nong Kiaw - Variable
Because the total distance from Luang Prabang to Nong Kiaw is 140 kilometers, you first have a transfer. In consultation with the agent you decide how many kilometers you want to cycle. The most beautiful parts are from Ban Hat Nga to Ban Phak Nga and from Pakmong to Nong Kiaw. If you do these parts of the route, you have covered a total of 70 km. From the toll bridge in Ban Hat Nga (40 km from Luang Prabang) the landscape is impressive with karst mountains and you follow the river valley of the Nam Ou. The road goes up and down constantly with the occasional longer ascent of a maximum of 3 kilometers in length. Along the way you regularly pass through villages, not mentioned in the text, with restaurants and shops. The distances behind the mentioned villages are calculated from the village of Ban Hat Nga that lies behind the toll bridge.
Day 4 - Boat trip on the Nam Ou to Muang KhuaToday you exchange the bike for the boat for a nice trip on the upper stream of the Nam Ou river. The driver of the Laotian back-up car will be waiting for you at 10:00 in the morning at the hotel reception. He will guide you on the boat to Muang Khua where the transfer with the Vietnamese guide will take place the next day. You can ask the hotel to help carry the luggage to the boat (5000 KIP tip per bag).
Occasionally you will see an abandoned village and lots of unspoilt nature. The trip takes 5 to 6 hours. There is no toilet on board, so if you have to go to the toilet, indicate this to the boatswain who will then lay on a sandbar.
Upon arrival in Muang Khua the boat moors on the left bank. You follow the road to the top that makes a sharp left turn after about 400 meters. On the left you will see your accommodation, Sernaly Hotel. You can have dinner and breakfast in a local restaurant with a view of the Nam Ou. Tonight you will also meet the Vietnamese guide and driver who will guide you from tomorrow morning.
Day 5 - Muang Khua - border - Dien Bien Phu - 70 kmToday you will cycle through a predominantly wooded area to the border with Vietnam and will be accompanied by the Vietnamese back-up car and guide. The first 25 kilometers is a lot of climbing, after which you descend to Muang May, where you will have lunch. Then you follow the Nam Nua river for a while. The last 10 kilometers you have to climb to the border again. From the border you will receive a transfer to Dien Bien Phu.Day 6 - Dien Bien Phu - Tuan Giao - 80 kmThe area that you cycle through today is mainly inhabited by Thai Dam. You first follow a river valley. Halfway there is a gradual climb to a beautiful pass. After a long descent you will have lunch in Muong Ang. Then you cycle through a river valley with karst mountains. The rice fields in this valley are irrigated by means of water mills.
For Tuan Giao there is a small pass that you have to climb.
Day 7 - Tuan Giao - Son La - 90 kmAfter a short flat approach, you will climb to the highest point of the tour today, the "between heaven and hell" pass. After a long descent you cycle relatively flat for a long time. Before you reach Son La, you still need a small pass. Son La is the largest city in this region and has a wide variety of ethnic minorities. Day 8 - Son La - transfer - Moc Chau - 45 km
The day starts with a transfer to Yen Chau. From here you gradually climb the valley of the Da River to Moc Chau on a high plateau (850 meters). Along the way you regularly pass through villages with shops and restaurants.
Day 9 - Moc Chau - Mai Chau - 85 kmThe first half of this route is on a nice little road. Along the way you can visit a tea plantation and you will pass a village with blue H’mong. The second part of the tour is on the main road where a 30-kilometer descent takes you into the picturesque valley of Mai Chau.Day 10 - Mai Chau - Canh Nang - transfer - Cuc Phuong National Park - 80 kmToday you will follow the valley of the Ma River for a long time on a small road that runs through the protected areas of Pu Hu and Pu Luang. The slopes along the banks are predominantly overgrown with wild bamboo. You regularly visit villages with small factories where bamboo products such as chop sticks are produced. Your tour ends in Canh Nang, from where you will be transferred to the oldest National Park, Cuc Phuong, where you will spend the night at the edge of the park. The road constantly ascends and descends with an occasional ascent of 2 to 3 kilometers in length.Day 11 - Cuc Phuong National Park - transfer Hanoi - 20 / 40 kmToday you will visit the Primate Rescue Center and take a bike ride through the park. As there is only 1 road through the park, you cycle back and forth on the same road. If you do not want that, the car will pick you up from the park in consultation with the guide. After lunch you will receive a transfer to your hotel in Hanoi.
