Through Vast Forests to Ancient Towns

Always thought fairy tales took place in a distant land beyond the horizon? Germany’s Hessen proves otherwise. Here, in the land of vast forests, silent villages and centuries-old towns, Sleeping Beauty awoke and Little Red Riding Hood faced the Big Bad Wolf. Thanks to Jakob and Wilhelm Grimm, who gave life to these characters. Kassel was the epicenter. The city still features a statue of the brothers.

Timber, Timber, Timber

Your journey begins in Hannoversch Münden, one of the most complete half-timbered towns in Germany. With over seven hundred of these historic buildings, you’ll experience the atmosphere of centuries past. Following the Fulda River, you cycle through Kassel and Melsungen to reach the romantic town of Rotenburg. Here too, half-timbered charm dominates the scene. On the way back, you follow the winding Werra River to cherry town Witzenhausen, again full of medieval charm.

Imperial Grandeur

The city has few old houses left (thanks to WWII), but Kassel still boasts the famous Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe—the largest of its kind in Europe. The palace houses works by Rembrandt, Rubens, Van Dyck, and Jordaens, to name just a few Old Masters. The park itself features over six hundred species of trees and shrubs, a 7 km long avenue, and a monumental statue of Hercules. It still reflects the power and splendor of the former prince-electors.

Enchanting Bad Sooden-Allendorf

Had Mother Hulda known about Bad Sooden-Allendorf back in the day, she surely would have traded her steaming forest home for this charming spa town. The river Werra winds its way through the medieval half-timbered town, while the Hohe Meißner—the legendary mountain of Mother Hulda—stretches its foothills right up to the town gates. Park your bike for a stroll through the picturesque old town, to “Little Venice” and the Söder Gate. Don’t miss the beautifully landscaped spa gardens.
